The future of food packaging companies

In today’s day in age, consumers are constantly reminded of the importance of sustainable living and making greener decisions. The opportunities for reducing waste, reusing packaging, bottles and containers, and recycling wherever possible are endless and we’ve seen the world come together to ensure a brighter tomorrow for the population and for the Earth.

While consumers are doing their part and integrating these positive changes into their daily lives, we should be taking a deeper look at what packaging companies – often seen as ground zero for waste production – are doing to ensure that their products are making a difference whether it be for the environment, for unique or niche industries, for social good, and ultimately for future generations.

If Mother Nature could celebrate the innovation and advancements that the package industry has accomplished in recent years, we’re sure she would! While there is an ongoing need for companies to provide environmentally-friendly alternatives, it goes without question that we’re certainly on the right track. As more companies strive to create safer, smarter and greener solutions, it’s important to acknowledge that the collaborative efforts of companies across the board is what will determine how the environment benefits from the shift.

As companies develop new and improved packaging options that will drive impactful industry action and foster a sustainable future, transparent and honest business practices should be at the forefront. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) – a federal agency that protects consumers and businesses by preventing deceptive and unfair practices – has released “Green Guides”, which is a useful resource that encourages and regulates the use of environmental marketing claims. This guide is available to the public and offers insight to a range of terms such as compostable, degradable, and recyclable. The guide also provides context for claims that products are non-toxic, ozone-safe or ozone-friendly, and made from renewable materials.

Benefits of Thermoformed Plastic Packaging

When it comes to buying packaged products, the type of packaging is becoming a crucial deciding factor among consumers. In fact, a 2016 West Rock Consumer Insights Study showed 26% of respondents agreed that packaging is extremely important to overall satisfaction with the product. That number increased from 18% in 2013 and is sure to continue rising. Because of the importance of packaging, more companies are choosing their packaging materials carefully. Thermoformed packaging is becoming a more popular choice, and this article is going to discuss why.

First, let’s talk about how thermoformed packaging is made. It’s made using a conversion process that heats a plastic sheet to a pliable forming temperature. The plastic is then molded into a specific shape and trimmed to create the final product. These plastic packages are thin and rigid and are applicable to a variety of consumer products.

This process of creating plastic products can be used to make different products like:

Clamshell packaging
Tamper evident clamshells
Safety glasses cases
Fishing utility boxes
Ammo storage cases
Retail packaging
Aside from the versatility this process offers, there are several other reasons why companies are choosing thermoformed packaging. This type of packaging can be made to be protective of what’s inside, which comes into play in industries like pharmaceuticals. Using this production method, the plastic containers will protect what’s inside and prevent contamination or tampering.

Additionally, thermoformed packaging can be changed to fill a specific want or need. For example, retailers can choose a transparent, yet sturdy plastic container to hold their items. These containers will not only properly hold whatever is inside, they can be easily recognized by consumers.

And lastly, this method of creating plastic containers provides dependable, high-quality results. All plastic containers, whether they hold food, skin care products, or vehicle fluids, need to protect whatever is inside from external factors. So not only do these containers need to be able to meet high standards, they need to look nice while doing it. And that’s exactly what thermoformed packaging does. It’s durable, reliable, and allows retailers to customize their packaging to represent their brand and products.

Overall, thermoformed packaging offers everything a packaging product could need. From simple, clear packages to customized, unique products, more companies are choosing this method for creating their plastic packaging.

Classic packaging Egg Box

One of the most environmentally friendly packaging containers sold today is the egg box. It is made from paper pulp and was introduced in the 1930’s. Its design has not changed much since then.

It was replaced for a while with PET packaging but the public preferred the natural look and feel of the paper pulp carton. It was even replaced at one time with expanded polystyrene (the same materials as McDonalds burgers are packaged in).

Recycled paper needs a high quality surface, which is achieved by bleaching the surface. As we know bleach is not environmentally friendly and if it enters the water source can cause damage to the environment.

Pulp on the other hand does not require this quality surface but instead is used with a textured, natural surface.
This material is chemical free and is much more environmentally friendly than the plastic PET alternative.

The egg tray is a shell or Monocoque structure. It does not have a frame. It relies upon the shape that it has been moulded into to give it its strength. Monocoque structures are designed to be both light and strong.
The egg box is made from thin sheet material, yet it is surprisingly strong. It is the folds and curves that give it it’s strength.
