Spain will levy taxes on plastic bags and boxes

According to Oulang News, the plenary meeting of Spanish cabinet ministers opened the green light for the release of the draft plastic tax text today, which will mean that Spain will set up a new tax to levy taxes on contaminated plastics and waste products. The Spanish government made a plan to levy taxes on plastic products last year. After the draft legislation was released by the cabinet, it will be submitted to the parliament for discussion to formally formulate a plastic tax.

According to the explanation of the government spokesman, Ms. Mar í a Jes ú s Montero, at the press conference after the plenary meeting of the cabinet, “this is an unfinished task, and now it is again mentioned to the work desk agenda”, “this is one of the biggest challenges in the environment, and the legislation is aimed at and contributes to the sustainability of human health, including the proper management and treatment of plastics and waste products.” According to the explanation, “The legislative text for the first time limits the use of disposable plastic products, will set up taxes to limit the use, and require plastic manufacturers to provide necessary information to consumers according to the EU policy line, and keep consistent with the EU to make it a suitable resource”, “The legislative text includes taxing waste incineration sites and making landfill disposal the last choice.

In short, for example, plastic bags and packaging boxes used in stores and restaurants will be taxed later. According to the draft legislation, the amount of one-time non-recyclable plastic products will be charged at 0.45 euros/kg. That is to say, in the future, stores will pay a tax of 0.45 euros per kilogram for purchasing disposable plastic bags for consumers from suppliers. However, these are implemented after the draft legislation is officially released by the Congress, which may take several months, but may be earlier. This is the expected legislation. After Spain legislated a few years ago to prohibit shops from providing free plastic bags to customers, the government announced that it would collect plastic taxes.
